My name is Adam Thompson and I am asking for your vote. Experiences shape our character. Below details why I am best suited to represent Murray City Council District #3. I am the son of a murdered mother. At 10 years old, I found my mother, taken by gun violence, on the floor of our family owned antique shop. I am grateful my last words to her were “I love you.” My father was a school teacher. My brother and I were forced to raise ourselves. Our family waited 5 long years until my uncle Dominic, an undercover police officer, personally solved her case. Resiliency is hardwired into my DNA. I am a cancer survivor. At 20 years old, I was forced to drop out of college for treatment. I battled four cycles of chemotherapy, two significant surgeries, pulmonary toxicity from bleomycin, and constant denials of coverage from my insurance provider. I empathize with people fighting medical issues. Currently, I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist, specializing in leukemia and lymphoma immunophenotyping at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray’s City Council District #3. I am a father who lost his only child. Our son was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a lethal congenital birth defect. Burying a child is something no parent should experience. We named him Dominic to honor my uncle above. I am a vested community leader. As the Vice President of the Three Fountains Home Owner’s Association, I am grateful to serve such an actively involved community of 297 homes. Some say it is a thankless job, but I am eternally thankful. Three Fountains epitomizes the rich history of Murray. I also continue to serve as President for Waterside Cove HOA, representing an additional 132 condominiums. I am a veteran of the United States Army. I served on active duty for 7+ years and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Some of my more prestigious awards include: the Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB), Soldier of the Year for the Material Research Medical Command, Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, Distinguished Honor Graduate during twelve months of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), Distinguished Leadership Graduate and Honor Graduate throughout Warrior Leaders Course, Commandant’s List at Advanced Leaders Course, 1 Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), 3 Army Accommodation Medals (ARCOM), and 11 Army Achievement Medals (AAM). All of my individual successes can be attributed to others. There is no greater blessing in the military than to be surrounded by outstanding mentors and leaders. I am a husband. Alyssa and I married in March 2013. Alyssa works in the veterinary field, volunteers at Best Friends, and is generally obsessed with animals (especially the furry ones). She is a veteran of the United States Army as well. We met during training for the Expert Field Medical Badge and have since been inseparable. I have a diverse education. I graduated 7th in my class from Cahokia High School, a historically underperforming, low income secondary school on the Illinois side of the St. Louis metropolitan area. I firmly believe local and state policies have perpetuated and even institutionalized this vicious cycle. It is just as important to learn from examples of poor leadership. I now hold an Associate of Science in Clinical Sciences from George Washington University, a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College, and a Master of Real Estate Development from the University of Utah. I am member of the Appraisal Institute and NAOIP Utah.
