My name is Emily Leslie, and I’m the Democrat running to be your next State Representative. I come from a Union Strong Family and am a working-class woman with extensive experience in leadership. I have lived in Georgia for nearly a decade and in Gwinnett for the last seven years. I am the mother of two boys, aged 14 and 5 years old, one of which lives with a disability. After I discovered my son had a learning disorder, I received a scholarship and pursued an Education in Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, so I could effectively advocate for my son and members of the Disability community. I have worked as a Mental Health Peer Counselor and Addiction and Recovery Specialist, I hold numerous certifications in my field. My education also includes Global Politics and International Human Rights Law, International Law, Humanitarian Law, and International Investment. Locally I was elected to serve as the Chair for our local school council in 2018-2019. While serving on the Council it became clear that teachers need support and ESL students and pupils living with disabilities need advocacy. Prior to running for office, I worked for Amnesty International as the Legislative Lead Coordinator for our State. I also worked for a well known progressive organization and used my position to highlight local elections in Gwinnett. I serve as an elected Post seat holder in the Gwinnett Democratic Party and serve on several committees within the party. I currently work as a Senior Adviser at the New York Center for Foreign Policy Affairs. In 2018 I ran as an emergency write-in candidate after learning no Democrat had filed for the seat. Although I was just short of victory, our community came together and ran the most successful write-in campaign in Georgia history. This time, I am on the ballot and campaigning on the Demo values that we hold dear. We deserve the best schools for our kids, clean energy, fair elections, equal rights, healthcare that we can ALL depend on, and accessibility for all our neighbors. I am ready to fight this fight, and your support is essential to the success of our campaign.
