A New Path Forward: Support James D. Ruchti for Governor of Idaho

Idaho is at an inflection point, and I’m running for Governor in 2026 because I’ve seen what happens when leadership either steps up - or punts problems down the road. I’ve served our community in the Legislature through tough economic cycles, including the Great Recession, when revenues dried up and budgets were cut to the bone. I remember how long it took to rebuild what we dismantled, and I’m deeply concerned we’re heading back toward that same kind of short-sighted budgeting - only this time by choice, through rushed and bare-bones budget decisions and political chaos that distract from the real work Idaho families expect us to do.
When budgets get squeezed, it isn’t abstract - it hits the essential services that hold our communities together. Hospitals and public health systems need stability, schools need safe buildings and enough staff, and our jails and courts need the capacity to keep the public safe while also delivering justice that’s smart and effective. In the Legislature, I’ve pushed for data-driven policy and real solutions - because wasting money on what sounds tough but doesn’t work is a luxury Idaho can’t afford. Whether it’s public safety, education, or health care, the job is to fund what works, cut what doesn’t, and be honest about the consequences when we underinvest.
What I hear from Idahoans is a desire for a state that functions - and a growing worry that we’re drifting off course. In statewide polling, education remains Idahoans’ top priority, and for the first time in the survey’s history more Idahoans say the state is on the wrong track than the right track. That doesn’t mean people have lost faith in Idaho; it means they’re asking for government that focuses on the basics: good schools, safe communities, and an economy that works for regular working families. I’m running for Governor because I believe we can meet that moment with steady, practical leadership instead of division and disruption.
And I’ll be candid: I believe I’m our best shot to make positive change because I’ve done this work the right way - listening, building coalitions, and keeping my focus on outcomes, not headlines. I’ve worked to protect local control, stand up for public schools, and call out policies that put ideology over common sense. As Governor, my commitment is simple: bring stability back to budgeting, fully fund the essential services Idaho relies on, and lead with respect for people who may not always agree but still want a better future for our kids.
